I'll admit it. I had never heard of beta readers before entering the publishing world in a professional capacity. Are there alpha readers that come before beta readers? (Yes.) If so, what's their purpose? (Some authors work with writing coaches. Others ask their Aunt Millie.) I had to do a bit of investigating and get some clarification.


This post focuses on beta readers. Why? Because they are supposed to be an impartial third party that gives you feedback on your draft. They do not edit, but they can provide valuable insights to help you along your publishing journey.
